The short answer? Yes. An ultrasound will ensure that you have an intrauterine pregnancy.
The abortion pill can mask symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy, which can be very dangerous. An ectopic pregnancy is when the embryo grows outside your uterus, usually in your fallopian tube. If the embryo is in the fallopian tube, the abortion pill won’t end your pregnancy, and the embryo will continue to grow and could cause the tube to burst. The cramping and abdominal pain that often occurs after using the abortion pill are similar to the symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy. You might not realize until it’s too late that you must seek emergency care, which puts your life at risk. If you have little or no bleeding after taking misoprostol, it could also be a warning sign of an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy is an emergency–you should immediately contact your doctor or emergency room at the hospital. The best option is to get an ultrasound before taking the abortion pill to ensure the embryo is inside your uterus.
